PETALING JAYA: Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, has expressed concern over mental health issues affecting Malaysian children and adolescents.
Her Majesty said this prompted Istana Negara to hold a discussion to examine initiatives related to developing and strengthening complaint and counselling systems, particularly to assist adolescents facing emotional distress, mental health issues and various life challenges.
"The discussion focused on efforts to strengthen complaint mechanisms and ensure that assistance channels are accessible, safe and effective, while improving support systems for students who require attention and assistance.
"In addition, direct involvement by the Malaysian Counselling Association (Perkama International), working closely with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry through registered and trained counsellors accredited by the Board of Counsellors, was also initiated for this purpose," said in a post on Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar's Facebook page.
Her Majesty added that the mental health of children and adolescents must be prioritised.
"They need to know that we love them. It is our collective responsibility, regardless of rank, position or occupation, to safeguard their physical and mental health and pay attention to their emotions, whether they are at home or at school.
"Awareness of the importance of mental health must continue to be raised so that signs of emotional distress can be identified early and appropriate assistance can be provided," Her Majesty said.
