Adopt holistic approach for road safety

I REFER to the recurring debate on the topic of implementing certain measures to ensure senior citizens are able to continue driving safely. I agree that with age, one’s reflexes, strength, cognition, etc. will decrease, although this is not universal.

If safety is the overriding reason for the government to implement mandatory medical tests for elderly drivers before they can renew their licence, then this policy must also be extended to other drivers, particularly those who suffer from medical conditions including but not limited to Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, very poor vision or hearing, amputated limbs and maybe even severe depressive and schizophrenic cases.
