THE workplace reforms for working women, especially mothers with children to care for, should be given proper attention in addition to financial assistance.
Post-maternity leave allowances are appreciated; however, mothers need more than cash support to balance their professional and family responsibilities.
Wanita MCA suggests the following matters should be considered in workplace reforms and policies to ease the burden on working mothers.
1. Workplace childcare facilities should be provided. Malaysia has only 265 registered workplace nurseries as of 2024, which reflects the limited support available for working women. Providing such services would not only ease mothers’ burdens but also encourage more women to enter or remain in the workforce.
2. Where workplace childcare cannot be provided, employers should offer flexible working arrangements for women with children, particularly infants and toddlers, including options such as working from home and hybrid work models. This would allow them to fulfil their professional responsibilities without neglecting childcare.
3. While maternity and paternity leave are essential employee benefits, parental leave should also be provided for working parents, especially mothers. Parents may need to care for their children during illness or medical emergencies. Rather than relying on emergency or annual leave, dedicated parental leave would be more appropriate. Employee welfare should extend to ensuring a healthy balance between work and family life.
4. The post-maternity period is critical, as many women experience post-partum depression, which can affect their mental health through intense sadness, anxiety and fatigue. To support them during this period, companies should consider offering counselling services.
Ahead of Labour Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an allowance of up to 30 days following 98 days of maternity leave for working women, aimed at supporting women after childbirth.
Wanita MCA stresses that women’s empowerment should not be limited to post-maternity allowances. Effective workplace reforms and policies must be implemented to build a supportive and sustainable environment for working women.
