PULAU Kapas is one of Terengganu's most popular island getaways, drawing snorkellers and day-trippers to its clear waters year-round.

A video circulating on social media on Wednesday (July 1) showed something rather less idyllic in those same waters: one boat ramming another before making a run for it.

Did a boat skipper really crash into another vessel near Pulau Kapas because he fell asleep at the helm?

Verdict:

TRUE

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Terengganu confirmed it is investigating an incident involving a large offshore fishing vessel suspected of striking a smaller fishing vessel before fleeing the scene in the waters off Pulau Kapas.

MMEA Terengganu director Captain Maritime Hamiludin Che Awang said investigations are being carried out to identify the vessels involved and gather relevant evidence.

Initial investigations found the incident was believed to have been caused by the skipper of the large offshore fishing vessel falling asleep while operating it.

"The situation caused the boat he was piloting to lose control and strike the stern of the smaller fishing vessel.

"However, in the incident, no casualties involving the crew of the smaller fishing vessel were reported," said Hamiludin.

He added that no police report had been lodged by the owner of the smaller fishing vessel.

Both parties are reported to have reached an amicable settlement, with the owner of the larger vessel agreeing to bear the full cost of repairs to the smaller vessel, estimated at RM10,000.

Hamiludin stressed that MMEA would not compromise on any form of negligence in the operation of vessels at sea, as it posed serious risks to the safety of lives on the water.

He reminded boat operators to always ensure they were alert, well-rested and fully focused when navigating.

"MMEA will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement in the waters of this state to ensure that the safety of navigation is always maintained," he said.

Members of the public with further information on the incident are urged to contact the Terengganu Maritime Operations Centre at 013-7464357 or the emergency line at 999.
