QuickCheck: Is Bukit Jalil one of the top ten biggest football stadiums in the world?

THE World Cup is at full swing here and football fever is at an all-time high as fans across the globe cheer on their favourite teams. Imagine being there in the crowd at legendary football stadiums like the Estadio Azteca as 90,000 souls erupt into pandemonium when your favourite team scores a goal.

While not many Malaysians would be able to watch the World Cup in person, perhaps we can still experience footballing passion of a similar scale at our Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Is Bukit Jalil one of the top ten biggest football stadiums in the world?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Watching Malaysia play in the World Cup may not be in our near future, except if we were to host the tournament. And if we did, Malaysia already has a stadium big enough to host the presumed final. With a capacity of 87,411, Bukit Jalil rivals the size of the Lusail Stadium (88,966) in Qatar that hosted the 2022 World Cup final and the MetLife Stadium (82,500) in the United States that is due to host the final in a few weeks.

While the estimates vary slightly, Bukit Jalil is listed as one of the top ten biggest football stadiums in the world. It is also the biggest football stadium in Southeast Asia.

For the record, the world's largest football stadium is Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in North Korea, with an approximate capacity of 114,000 for matches.
