SUPPLIERS and service providers in Malaysia have been receiving documents that appear to be official government purchase orders from the Transport Ministry, complete with the names, identities and job titles of real ministry officers.
The orders look legitimate enough to act on, and some vendors may already have supplied goods or services based on them.
But are fake government purchase orders really being issued in the Transport Ministry's name?
Verdict:

TRUE
The Transport Ministry has confirmed that irresponsible parties have been impersonating its officers and misusing their names, identities and positions to issue fake government purchase orders and procurement documents to external parties.
In a media statement issued on Oct 2, the Transport Ministry said all legitimate ministry procurement is carried out through official government financial and procurement procedures, including the ePerolehan system, which is the government's official electronic procurement platform.
Any government purchase order or procurement document that cannot be verified through official channels is not valid and does not represent the Transport Ministry, the statement said.
Suppliers, companies and service providers are advised not to proceed with any supply, delivery, provision of services or financial transaction based on suspicious documents or instructions until their authenticity has been confirmed directly with the Transport Ministry.
Those with doubts about any document or government purchase order can contact the Transport Ministry's call centre at 1 800 88 7723 or via official email at aduan@mot.gov.my.
Any party that receives a document suspected to be fake or has suffered losses as a result of this fraud is urged to lodge a police report immediately and to keep all related documents and communication records for investigation purposes.
The Transport Ministry said it takes the misuse of its officers' names and identities seriously and urged all parties to always verify through official channels before proceeding with any transaction involving the ministry.
