QuickCheck: Did a man drive the wrong way on the Maju Expressway?

A WRONG turn can lead to many unintended consequences.

In the less glitzy echelons of Hollywood, a Wrong Turn back in 2003 led to an encounter with cannibals, two sequels, two prequels and a reboot.

For one motorist, it just resulted in a 25-second viral video showing him driving against traffic.

The incident was said to have occurred on the Maju Expressway (MEX).

Did this happen as claimed?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Sepang OCPD Asst Comm Norhizam Bahaman said police detected the video clip circulating on social media at about 10.30am on Sunday (Sept 4).

"Following the viral video, the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division traced the driver and vehicle involved," he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 5).

ACP Norhizam said police subsequently located the driver and vehicle and brought them to the Sepang police headquarters for further action.

"Investigations found that the driver was travelling from Putrajaya towards Puchong before missing the turn towards the MEX (Putrajaya) toll plaza.

"The driver then allegedly made a U-turn and drove against traffic to get back on the route towards Puchong," he said.

He added that the driver drove slowly with the car's hazard lights on for about 30m before entering the lane towards Puchong.

The driver, a local man in his 40s, is a civil servant, ACP Norhizam added.

"We have recorded his statement, and investigations also found that he had a valid driving licence," he said.

ACP Norhizam said no accident or injuries involving other road users were reported in the incident.

"The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
