A penguin waddles over to its partner, carrying a small pebble in its beak, then places it at the other’s feet.
It sounds like a scene from a romantic animated film. Videos and posts online have often described the behaviour as a penguin “proposal”.
But do penguins really use pebbles to propose to their partners?
Verdict:

TRUE
For the Adelie (Pygoscelis adeliae) and Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) – mating is for life.
During courtship, the male usually takes the lead by “proposing” to his desired partner with a specially selected pebble.
If the female is impressed, she too will find a pebble.
They will then go back and forth collecting pebbles to build a nest.
A suitable pebble can help raise the nest above the surrounding ground and improve drainage, helping protect eggs from melting snow and water.
Penguins are generally monogamous during breeding seasons, working together to raise their chicks.
