QuickCheck: Is June 2 a replacement public holiday for Wesak?

WESAK Day falls on a Sunday (May 31) this year, which under normal circumstances would simply mean the replacement holiday rolls over to the following Monday (June 1).

But with the Agong's Birthday falling on that same Monday, Malaysians have been left wondering whether they are getting an extra day off at all, and if so, when.

Is Tuesday (June 2) really the replacement holiday for Wesak Day 2026?

Verdict:

TRUE

The Human Resources Ministry has confirmed that Tuesday is the official replacement holiday for Wesak Day 2026 for private sector workers in Peninsular Malaysia.

Under Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act 1951, when a public holiday falls on a weekly rest day, the following working day becomes the replacement public holiday.

With Wesak Day falling on Sunday, the replacement would ordinarily fall on Monday.

However, June 1 is the Agong's official birthday, a compulsory paid public holiday for private sector employees under the Employment Act 1955 that cannot be substituted or replaced by another day.

The ministry confirmed that because of this overlap, the replacement holiday for Wesak Day was moved to the next available working day, Tuesday.

The ministry also reminded employers that any worker required to work on a public holiday was entitled to special payment under the Employment Act 1955.

Fact-checkers at MyCheck Malaysia, who investigated the matter after receiving multiple public queries about the arrangement, confirmed the ruling was consistent with the provisions of the Public Holidays Act 1951 as interpreted by the Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department.

Workers in Sarawak faced a different arrangement due to an additional overlap.

In Sarawak, Wesak Day on Sunday, the Agong's Birthday and Hari Gawai all fall in the same two-day window of June 1, creating a three-way overlap of public holidays.

The Sarawak Labour Department confirmed that private sector workers in the state would receive Wednesday (June 3) as the Wesak Day replacement holiday and Thursday (June 4) as the replacement holiday for Hari Gawai.

Sarawak public sector workers were advised to refer to their respective department circulars for guidance, as the ruling applied to private sector employees only.
