QuickCheck: Did a man cause a major accident on Jalan Ampang while trying to flee the cops?

A VIRAL video showing a dramatic police chase ending in a multi-vehicle collision at a traffic light in Kuala Lumpur left many Malaysians asking questions about what had triggered the incident.

The clip spread quickly across social media platforms, but the full picture of what happened and why remained unclear to most who watched it.

So did a man really cause a major accident on Jalan Ampang while attempting to flee a police check?

Verdict:

TRUE

The Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, confirmed the incident after his team came across a viral video of the chase on social media at around 10am on Wednesday (May 6).

Upon investigation, the actual incident was found to have taken place earlier, at around 6.15pm on Monday (May 4).

According to Mohd Zamzuri, the incident began when a 31-year-old male driver of a white sedan failed to stop after being flagged down by the Ampang MPV unit.

The suspect fled, triggering a police chase that began in the Pandan Indah area before continuing all the way to Jalan Ampang.

Upon reaching Jalan Ampang, the suspect lost control of his vehicle and crashed into two other cars that were stopped at a red light.

"The vehicles involved were an SUV driven by a 42-year-old woman and a sedan driven by a 35-year-old man," said Mohd Zamzuri.

He added that the accident resulted in vehicle damage but no injuries were reported by any of the parties involved.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene by members of the Ampang MPV unit.

Police found 4.7 grams of yaba pills in his possession, and a urine screening test returned positive results for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

The suspect was taken to the Ampang District Police Headquarters for further action.

Mohd Zamzuri said the Ampang District Police Headquarters has opened an investigation paper under Section 186 of the Penal Code, while Kuala Lumpur Traffic is investigating under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Wangsa Maju District Police Headquarters is investigating under Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
