QuickCheck: Were travellers at KLIA2 asked to carry strangers’ bags through screening counters?

Air travel has always come with rules, fees and a fair bit of queueing.

So it is no surprise that some passengers have tried to get creative with their carry-on bags.

Is it true that two strangers at KLIA2 asked travellers to carry overweight hand luggage past screening to avoid extra charges as claimed on social media?

Verdict:

TRUE

The police are investigating a viral social media post alleging that an unidentified individual had asked another passenger to carry his hand luggage past the departure screening counters at KLIA Terminal 2.

KLIA OCPD Asst Comm Ravi Munusamy said no police report has been lodged over the incident so far.

"However, preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred at 2.14pm on Feb 9 at the Level 3 entrance to the domestic departure screening counters of the airport.

“Investigations found that two local individuals had attempted to ask other passengers, who were unknown to them, to carry their hand luggage past the departure counter to avoid additional charges,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 12).

The bag had earlier been found to exceed the maximum permitted weight for hand carry luggage by airline staff on duty, he added.

"Further checks by airport security personnel, including scanning of all the luggage carried by the individuals, found no prohibited or illegal items inside the bags.

“No criminal offence was committed in the incident,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said the act of requesting assistance from strangers to carry personal luggage had caused public unease and posed potential security risks.

"Members of the public are advised not to agree to carry bags belonging to unknown individuals to avoid becoming victims of unforeseen circumstances.

"Passengers should also plan their travel responsibly and ensure their hand luggage complies with airline weight limits to avoid additional charges," he said.
