One of the best things about living in the city during the holiday season is the reduced traffic. While the malls are crowded with holiday shoppers and visitors from out of town, the streets themselves are almost empty.
Still, just because the traffic is terrific doesn’t mean one should take it as permission to break the law.
Recently, a video of a group of motorcyclists who engaged in illegal racing and dangerous driving was widely shared online. In the video, one of the motorcyclists ran a red light and crashed into a pickup truck.
Did the incident really happen, and is the video authentic?
Verdict:
TRUE
Lahad Datu District Police Chief, Asst Comm Dzulbaharin Ismail confirmed that the 21-year-old male suspect in the video was successfully tracked down before being arrested at his home in Felda Sahabat last Tuesday (Dec 23).
Sinar Harian reported that he said a video of the incident went viral on social media at 3.50am last Sunday (Dec 21).
"A motorcyclist ran a red light and crashed into a four-wheel drive vehicle on the Lahad Datu Airport road.
"As a result of information and quick action by a team of enforcement units from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 4.15 pm on Tuesday, he was successfully tracked down at his own residence," he said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 25).
He added that the arrested suspect was then taken to the Lahad Datu IPD for further investigation.
"The case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and the suspect has been remanded for four days for further action."
"Individuals who witnessed this incident are encouraged to come forward and contact the traffic investigation officer, Inspector Humaidi Harun, at 089-881255 or directly visit the Lahad Datu IPD to assist with the investigation," he said.
