QuickCheck: Has National Sports Day 2026 been cancelled because of the haze?

NATIONAL Sports Day 2026, due to be held at Bukit Jalil on Saturday (Oct 10), is said to have been cancelled because of the haze.

With unhealthy air quality recorded in many parts of the country, many people are unsure if their weekend plans are still on.

But has National Sports Day 2026 been cancelled because of the haze?

Verdict:

FALSE

National Sports Day 2026 has not been cancelled, but the event at Bukit Jalil has been postponed because of the haze, the Youth and Sports Ministry said.

In a statement on Friday (Oct 9), it said a new date will be announced later, subject to air quality returning to safe levels for outdoor activities.

The decision was made on the advice and with the agreement of the Youth and Sports Minister, it said.

The ministry said it has been monitoring air quality and the haze affecting several parts of the country.

"Following detailed discussions with the relevant government agencies, (the ministry) has examined the implications of holding a large-scale event under the present circumstances.

"The well-being of the people is always (the ministry's) priority, and public health and the safety of everyone involved have been fully taken into account," it said.

Calling the postponement a proactive and precautionary step to avoid any health risks to participants, organisers and the public, the ministry apologised for any inconvenience and thanked everyone for their understanding and cooperation.

The ministry also expressed gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for his concern over the haze affecting the country.

Events at the state level and other levels and locations, however, depend on local conditions and the decisions of the respective administrations.

As at the time of the statement, events in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Kedah, Penang, Negri Sembilan and Melaka have been postponed.

Events in Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Perlis, Perak, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan are going ahead as planned.

Malaysians have been urged to limit physical activity outside the home for now and to follow the health advice and guidelines issued by the Health Ministry and the Environment Department from time to time.
