PLAYGROUNDS are usually a place where children and teenagers play, socialise and sometimes fight. Because that's what kids do, right?

But a shocking video went viral recently, claiming that a group of boys had a brawl with weapons involved at a playground in Tawau.

Did this happen as claimed?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Fourteen boys aged between 12 and 14 have been arrested following a brawl involving weapons at a playground here, with footage circulating online helping police identify those involved.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Rosdi Mat Jusoh said the boys were detained on Oct 7 following investigations into the incident at Taman Ambar, Jalan Kuhara.

“Initial investigations found that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between two students before escalating into a fight involving several others.

“The viral video also helped police identify the individuals involved and their respective roles,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 8).

Police received a report about the fight at about 6pm on Oct 6.

ACP Rosdi said an iPhone 13 and a black bicycle believed to be linked to the investigation were seized.

One of those arrested was a foreign national who could not produce valid travel documents.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

“Rioting, attacking others or using any object as a weapon is a serious offence and will not be tolerated,” ACP Rosdi said.

He urged parents and guardians to monitor their children’s behaviour and social circles, while reminding students to avoid fights, provocation and groups that could lead them into criminal activity.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information can contact investigating officer Insp Robiatul Adawiyah Japri at 016-918 9402 or visit the nearest police station.
