A viral screenshot of an incident on Jalan Bandar Tenggara in Kota tinggi that was initially thought to have been an attempted robbery.
A TERRIFYING two-minute 12-second dashcam video went viral on social media showing a black luxury repeatedly braking in front of another vehicle on a dark, deserted stretch of road in Kota Tinggi.
The footage, which captured the black car stopping by the roadside before continuing its journey, left viewers convinced they were witnessing an attempted highway robbery in progress.
The driver recording the video, who was travelling home to Kota Tinggi via the old Kota Tinggi-Kluang road, clearly felt uncomfortable with the situation unfolding ahead. Was this truly an attempted highway robbery?
Verdict:
FALSE
Police have confirmed that the alleged attempted robbery involving two vehicles on Jalan Bandar Tenggara in Kota Tinggi, as went viral on social media, is not true.
Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said that based on the viral video, the incident was believed to have occurred at 8pm on Nov 14.
The incident involved a black BMW 320i and a small grey SUV.
"The claim of attempted robbery that was spread is not accurate. Initial investigations found there were no elements of attempted robbery. It was only a misunderstanding between the two drivers regarding road conduct," he said in a statement on Monday (Dec 22).
Yusof said the luxury car driver had lodged a report to deny the attempted robbery, whilst the SUV driver has not made any report so far.
He added that the SUV driver will be called in for a statement for further investigation.
He advised the public not to make any speculation that could affect the investigation process.
"Kota Tinggi police are committed and will take stern action against any individual or group involved in criminal activities or acts that violate the law," he said.
