QuickCheck: Is it true that Singaporeans get a subsidy to buy houses in Johor?

ADVERTISEMENTS on social media can sometimes promise deals that sound too good to be true.

Lately, Facebook has been flooded with claims that Singaporeans are eligible for a special subsidy to buy property in Johor.

Is this true?

Verdict:

FALSE

There is no subsidy scheme for Singaporeans to buy houses in Johor.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad confirmed that advertisements promoting a ‘Johor-Singapore housing subsidy’ are part of a scam.

"We take note of the warning from the Singapore police about the scam involving the Johor-Singapore housing subsidy," said Comm Ab Rahaman.

"No such cases have been reported here, but we are prepared to cooperate with the Singapore police if they need help with the investigation," said Comm Ab Rahaman.

Comm Ab Rahaman advised the public not to be easily influenced by offers related to subsidies and to take preventive measures to avoid falling victim to scams.

On Thursday (Sept 4), the Singapore police reportedly warned the public about the bogus housing subsidy that has been making the rounds on social media.

Advertisements about the scam reportedly outline a collaboration between the Singapore and Johor governments to provide subsidised housing.
