IN the age of digital trickery, videos can sometimes deceive even the most discerning eyes. A recent TikTok video has gone viral, purportedly featuring Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency's director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain claiming to resolve passport documentation issues. Was deepfake technology used to portray him?

Verdict:

TRUE

A TikTok video purportedly showing Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain is fake.

The AKPS said the video, which was uploaded by user "Hermano Kedutaan", used deepfake technology.

"The production and spread of the video is designed to tarnish the reputation of Comm Mohd Shuhaily by causing confusion among the public.

"We advise the public not to spread the video," the agency said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 6).

Spreading fake videos is an offence under the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

"We view this matter seriously and legal action will be taken against anyone who is involved in the production and distribution of the video," it added.
