Police are actively searching for the driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) recorded driving recklessly while evading a police patrol car in an incident that has gone viral on social media.

The 18-second video shows the SUV speeding and weaving between other vehicles at the Jalan Paboi intersection near Bukit Tambun.

Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Chief Supt Jay January Siowou said the incident occurred at about 11.15am last Friday when the vehicle’s driver was believed to be attempting to escape from the authorities.

He said that the police have received a report regarding the incident and an investigation is being conducted under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from performing their duties and Section 279 for reckless driving.

"The suspect’s actions not only endangered themselves but also threatened the safety of other road users. We are actively working to locate the driver," he said in a statement on Sunday.

The incident has raised concerns and sparked heated debate among the public after footage of the incident, recorded via a dashboard camera, went viral on social media.

Police are also requesting that anyone who witnessed the incident or has information contact the Investigating Officer, Insp Tuan Noremifarahana Tuan Roslan, at 019-8442162.
