QuickCheck: Does JPJ require senior citizens to get physical check-ups before renewing their driving licences?

RECENTLY, messages have been circulating on social media claiming that those over the age of 60 years old must undergo competency and health assessments before being allowed to renew their driving licences.

Is there any truth to this?

VERDICT:

FALSE

Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli denied the viral claims, saying that there are currently no additional requirements for senior citizens to renew their driving licences.

“For the record, the Transport Ministry and JPJ have not imposed any additional requirements for senior citizens to renew their driving licenses.

“The renewal process remains subject to the existing conditions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) under the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said in a statement Wednesday (Dec 18).

Aedy also advised the public to avoid sharing false information and to verify the accuracy of any information received.

"JPJ remains committed to ensuring the well-being of the public, particularly its customers.

“For more information on the renewal of Malaysian driving licences, visit www.jpj.gov.my,” he added.
