With the ongoing Godzilla x Kong crossover opening up more sequels with the end of its last film, it feels right to write to address the kaiju in the room.
It is clear to anyone watching the franchise that King Kong is seen as Hollywood's champion of the monster world, while Godzilla is Japan's pride and joy.
Having said that, how Japanese is Godzilla, actually? Is it true that he has been recognised by the Japanese government as a citizen of the Land of the Rising Sun?
VERDICT:
TRUE
As ridiculous as it may sound, Godzilla is a legally Japanese citizen and has been so since April 9, 2015.
On the official citizenship certificate, Godzilla's address is labelled as Shinjuku-ku, Kabukicho, 1-19-1, where the King of Monsters can be seen towering over the Shinjuku Toho Building.
In the same certificate distributed to some lucky 3,000 fans, his date of birth is marked as April 9, 1954, which is the release date of the original Godzilla film.
It stated the reason for Godzilla's special residency as "promoting Japanese entertainment, watching over the Kabuki-cho neighbourhood, and drawing visitors from around the globe".
Godzilla was also appointed as Shinjuku's tourism ambassador, with their job being to keep attracting tourists, and keeping Kabuki-cho a fun, safe destination for people of all kinds.
They even had a ceremony that Godzilla "attended" where he was presented with a sash from Shinjuku Mayor, Kenichi Yoshizumi.
Sadly, the same kind of treatment has yet to take place for Kong over in the US.
Maybe Kong needs to find someone to marry to get himself a Green Card.
