QuickCheck: Are scammers posing as friends to ask victims to lend them money through WhatsApp?


SCAMMERS are improvising on their tactics lately. They are using many ways to cheat innocent victims and steal their money.

It is advisable to be alert, careful and knowledgeable of the many tactics scammers are attempting to use to rob their victims of their money and personal savings.

This time around, scammers are hacking into one’s personal WhatsApp platform and posing as an acquaintance in order to borrow money from the victim while promising to return the money as soon as possible.

However, many claim that the money transferred into the potential scammer’s account has not been returned.

Is this true?

According to a statement by Bank Negara, the public are advised to be wary of increasing fraud syndicates on WhatsApp, where they can take over your account and impersonate someone you know, convincing you to lend them money.

Hence, Bank Negara has advised the public to always be careful especially during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.

If you are a victim of financial fraud, immediately contact your bank or the NSRC via 997.
