QuickCheck: Can you get a free laptop from the govt via Telegram?

THERE is no such thing as a free lunch. But maybe there is such a thing as a free laptop. There is a viral message floating around on WhatsApp that the government is giving away free laptops if you register at a website using your Telegram account.

Is this real?

VERDICT:

FALSE

According to fact-checking website MyCheck Malaysia, the message is a scam tactic used to hack into unsuspecting people's Telegram accounts, called Telegram Takeover.

It reminded the public to always be wary of supposedly "too good to be true" promotions and that all legitimate government URL links end with.gov.my.
