QuickCheck: Will EPF pay RM5,000 to your family if you die?

Apparently if you are an Employees Provident Fund (EPF) member, your next of kin will get RM5,000 in the event of your death with no questions asked.

However the payment will only be done if your family applies for the money within two months of your death. This is the claim made by a viral message on social media. Is this true?

VERDICT:

FALSE

According to the EPF, this message was fake.

"A sum of RM2,500 will be paid one time, based on EPF's discretion, to the next of kin of an EPF member in the event of their passing. However there are several conditions that need to met before the payment is approved," said the fund on Facebook.

The conditions are as follows.

- The member was a Malaysian citizen;

- The member was below the age of 60 at the time of death;

- Application for the payment is made within six months from the date of the member's death; and

- The member still has savings with the EPF.

EPF also said that members should always verify information that they receive about EPF by visiting www.kwsp.com.my.
