QuickCheck: Are Jalan TAR and Lorong TAR the same place?

IT IS about a week away from Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the shopping frenzy has begun. In the next few days, celebrants will be on the hunt for bargain deals on traditional wear and baked goods in anticipation of the festivity.

In Kuala Lumpur, the topmost shopping hotspots are Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman – Jalan TAR and Lorong TAR for short.

But is it true that these two roads are the same place?

Verdict:

FALSE

While Jalan TAR and Lorong TAR are adjacent to each other, they are two separate streets in the city centre.

Jalan TAR is a one-way road from the Sogo shopping centre heading towards Jalan Raja in Dataran Merdeka.

It hosts brick-and-mortar premises selling textiles and clothing, as well as restaurants and hotels.

Lorong TAR, meanwhile, stretches from the now-disused Odeon cinema in Jalan Dang Wangi and ends at Jalan Melayu in Masjid India.

During Ramadan, this street hosts the annual Hari Raya bazaar popular for selling traditional wear, biscuits, festive snacks and home decorative items.

This year, the bazaar will run until April 21, operating from 10am until 2am, daily.

Outside of the fasting month, Lorong TAR hosts a night market every Saturday.

During Ramadan, this market is temporarily relocated to Jalan TAR.
