QuickCheck: Did a person jump from the Penang Bridge as seen in a recent viral video?


A VIDEO uploaded to TikTok, that is also being shared on WhatsApp, claims to show a suicide attempt at the Penang Bridge.

Did someone really leap off as depicted in the video?

VERDICT:

TRUE

The Penang Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) confirmed that it received calls from the public about the incident, which happened at KM3.4 of the George Town-bound lane of the bridge at about 3:45pm on Tuesday (Nov 30).

Penang MMEA director Capt Abd Razak Mohamed said that a search-and-rescue operation was immediately organised, and the man - who was rescued by local fishermen - was handed over to the MMEA vessel in an unconscious state.

He was brought to the Batu Uban jetty, and then to the Penang Hospital for further treatment.
