Taxi driver killed, 11 others injured as vehicle hits Discovery Bay bus and truck


A Hong Kong taxi driver was killed and 11 others injured when his vehicle collided with a bus and a truck on Lantau Island on Tuesday evening.

Police said the taxi driver, heading towards Tung Chung, attempted to overtake a truck in the same lane on Cheung Tung Road at around 8pm.

He then swerved into the opposite lane but crashed into a route DB03P bus from Discovery Bay to Sunny Bay MTR station. The taxi also collided with the truck before coming to a standstill.

The taxi driver, 59, was knocked unconscious and left trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle, while his male passenger suffered back and neck injuries.

Nine passengers on the bus and the driver, also 59, sustained minor injuries.

The truck driver was not hurt.

The taxi driver and several injured passengers were taken to North Lantau Hospital in Tung Chung, where he was certified dead at 9.20pm.

The remaining injured were sent to Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung. -- SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
