KOTA BARU: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has yet to settle his RM50mil fine, says Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, citing the latest information received by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
“So far, the information we have received indicates that Najib has yet to fulfil the requirement,” he told reporters after launching the Attorney-General’s Chambers Madani Adopted School Programme here yesterday.
Asked whether Najib would still have to serve his prison sentence if the fine remained unpaid, Mohd Dusuki confirmed that this was the case, Bernama reported.
On Sept 18, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of the RM50mil fine.
On a separate matter, Mohd Dusuki said the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) was considering whether to seek the reinstatement of a murder charge against a senior police officer in the case involving the death of student Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie.
He said the AGC had appealed against the Ipoh High Court’s decision at the Court of Appeal last week, but was still examining the case before deciding on its arguments.
He had discussed the matter with AGC Prosecution Division head Datuk Masri Mohd Daud and the head of its Trial and Appeals Division.
On Oct 28, the Ipoh High Court sentenced DSP Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, 47, to seven years and six months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to an amended charge of causing Muhammad Zaharif’s death three years ago.
The charge was reduced from murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code to causing death under Section 304(b), which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine or both.
The judge ordered Mohd Nazri to serve his sentence from Dec 15, 2023, the date of his arrest. He was also ordered to pay RM50,000 in compensation to the victim’s father, Muhd Zamrie Zainal Abidin, 58, or face an additional year in prison.
