PETALING JAYA: Flood-related deaths are preventable and should never be treated as inevitable, says Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
Urging authorities and the public to work towards zero fatalities this Northeast Monsoon season, he said this would require stronger preparedness and coordinated action.
“Achieving this requires proactive preparedness, effective coordination and timely intervention by all relevant agencies.
“We must strive to ensure zero drownings, zero preventable deaths and zero avoidable tragedies throughout this monsoon season,” he said in a statement.
Lee said authorities must ensure flood-prone areas are identified, drainage systems properly maintained, evacuation centres ready and emergency supplies sufficient.
Rescue personnel and equipment must also be mobilised without delay, while coordination among agencies such as the National Disaster Management Agency, Fire and Rescue Department, police and local authorities must be strengthened.
He also called for more effective early warning systems, timely communication of flood alerts and swift evacuation if needed.
On public safety, Lee cautioned people against walking, riding or driving through floodwaters, warning that even seemingly shallow water could pose a danger.
Special attention should also be given to senior citizens, children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable residents in flood-prone areas, he said.
“Flood preparedness is not solely the responsibility of the government and emergency responders. Every individual, family, community and business has a role to play in preventing unnecessary loss of lives,” Lee added.
