MELAKA: A candidate should be judged by their capability, integrity and commitment to service, not family ties, says Datin Seri Dr Asmah Samat (pic).
The former public health specialist, whose husband Datuk Seri Jamil Salleh is the assemblyman for Dengkil, Selangor, dismissed suggestions that her involvement in politics would be an issue.
“There are elected representatives who are husband and wife, and have children who are also involved in politics. I do not think this is a new issue.
“If members of a family enter politics, we should view them as individuals who are willing to make sacrifices and contribute to the country’s progress and success,” she said, responding to comments on social media about her candidacy in the Melaka polls while her husband holds office in Selangor.
The 61-year-old, who is representing Bersatu, is set for a straight fight against Barisan Nasional incumbent Datuk Tuminah Kadi for the Pantai Kundor seat.
Dr Asmah, who retired three years ago after 34 years of service, said the public should not rush to draw negative conclusions about family members pursuing political careers.
Instead, she said, their principles, abilities and potential contributions should determine whether they deserved support.
“As long as someone has talent, knowledge and skills, and upholds integrity, trustworthiness and honesty, they should be given an opportunity to contribute,” she said.
Asked about establishing her own identity, Dr Asmah said she had strengths of her own, including ties with the local community.
A native of Kampung Paya Luboh in Tangga Batu, she grew up and received her early education in the area.
Dr Asmah said addressing the concerns of fishermen and small traders would be among her priorities, as both groups faced the effects of development along the coast.
