Fearing he would lose the prizes, the student paid the scammer a total of RM10,000 but received nothing in return.
> A man in Shanghai, China, allegedly scammed his friends out of more than 1.7 million yuan (RM1mil) using an AI-generated photo purportedly showing his father lying ill in bed, China Press reported.
Local media reported that the man, surnamed Jiang, shared the photo, claiming that his father was seriously ill with cancer and that he was asking for financial assistance.
Former classmates and friends lent him more than 1.7 million yuan.
Jiang used the money to invest in the stock market but lost the entire sum shortly afterwards.
On Oct 16, several of Jiang’s friends discovered that his father was in good health, contrary to what he had claimed.
They confronted Jiang, demanding he return their money.
The confrontation turned physical, and all those involved ended up at a police station.
It was at the station that police uncovered the alleged AI-related fraud.
Jiang was detained for further investigation.
