PETALING JAYA: A man whose citizenship status was questioned on social media was granted Malaysian citizenship through naturalisation in 2025, says the National Registration Department (NRD).
The department said the man, who was originally from Bangladesh, had obtained citizenship under Article 19(1) of the Federal Constitution in accordance with the law and established procedures.
"He had also been a permanent resident since 2009 and was married to a Malaysian woman," the department said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 27).
Meanwhile, NRD is investigating a separate case involving a woman alleged to be a Pakistani national whose citizenship status has also come under scrutiny on social media.
It said further checks were being conducted based on official records and relevant facts following a complaint.
"Further updates would be provided as the investigation progressed," the department added.
NRD also urged members of the public with concerns or information regarding an individual's citizenship status to submit their inquiries or complaints through its official channels.
It advised the public against disclosing individuals' personal information on social media.
The department reiterated its commitment to ensuring that registration matters, the issuance of identity documents and citizenship determinations were handled carefully, with integrity and in accordance with the law.
