PETALING JAYA: The Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will take over the investigation into the death of Noorizwan Zulkefly, who died while in police custody at the Cheras police headquarters.
Its director Comm Datuk M. Kumar confirmed the matter in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 27).
"The investigation is being conducted by the Prosecution/Legal Division (D5) of the Bukit Aman CID, under Section 331 of the Penal Code, which concerns voluntarily causing grievous hurt to extort a confession or to compel the restoration of property.
"The offence carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years and may also be punishable by a fine.
"The classification was made following a statement recorded from a forensic medical consultant with Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), who conducted the post-mortem examination and confirmed the presence of external injuries on the deceased's body.
"The pattern of injuries was consistent with blunt force trauma and was not self-inflicted.
"However, the full post-mortem report confirming the cause of death has yet to be obtained, pending laboratory analysis. The police are awaiting further information from the hospital regarding this matter," he said.
He added that investigations were ongoing to identify the police officers and personnel involved in handling the deceased while he was in custody.
