Family of man who died in custody wants MPs to raise matter in Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of Noorizwan Zulkefly, who died while in custody at the Cheras district police headquarters, has urged MPs to raise the matter in the Dewan Rakyat.

They also want Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to clarify the status of investigations into his death.

The family is seeking answers over allegations that Noorizwan sustained injuries while in custody and whether action has been taken against the police personnel allegedly involved.

His younger sister, Nooranis Zulkefly, said the family was still waiting for justice, 27 days after his death.

"We demand justice. We want everyone responsible to be arrested and suspended from duty, and we want them charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," she told a press conference at Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 27).

"It has been 27 days since our first press conference, yet no arrests have been made. What are they waiting for?

"Our family has been waiting and waiting, and we have been given various explanations. That is not what we want.

"We want those responsible to be arrested and brought to court."

Earlier, Noorizwan's family members, accompanied by lawyers and representatives of non-governmental organisations, marched from the National Monument to Parliament at about 10.30am to submit a memorandum calling for parliamentary intervention.

The memorandum also called for the establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

Noorizwan had been detained in connection with investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as well as Sections 457 and 379 of the Penal Code.

He was referred to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz in Cheras for treatment on Sept 30 before being pronounced dead at 1.52am on Oct 1.
