PTPTN to announce loan repayment deferment mechanism soon

GEORGE TOWN: The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) is finalising the mechanism for deferring loan repayments for low-income borrowers, as announced under Budget 2027.

Its chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim said details of how the initiative would be implemented were being discussed with the Finance Ministry and would be announced soon.

"Borrowers earning below RM2,500 a month will have their loan repayments deferred, while those earning between RM2,500 and RM3,000 will only need to pay RM50 a month. Those earning above RM3,000 must continue making repayments as usual.

"We are still discussing the details with the Finance Ministry and will announce the implementation mechanism more comprehensively soon,” she said at the Junior Superhero Simpan SSPN 2026 programme at Penang Hospital here on Tuesday (Oct 27).

Meanwhile, Norliza encouraged borrowers who are employed and can afford to repay their loans to continue making regular repayments, as they would be eligible for the 10 per cent discount announced under the budget.

She also urged borrowers with outstanding arrears to contact PTPTN to discuss restructuring their repayments to avoid being blacklisted. - Bernama
