KOTA KINABALU: Three warehouse blocks used to store plastic goods were destroyed in a fire at Mogoputi Industrial Park in Penampang near here.
The fire also destroyed 12 vehicles – comprising four vans, four four-wheel drive vehicles, two five-tonne lorries, a car and a motorcycle – parked within the compound at Phase 2 of the industrial park.
The blaze broke out at about 10.30pm on Thursday, but firefighters managed to prevent it from spreading to six neighbouring factories by establishing firebreaks.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Pisar Aziz said firefighters from the Penampang station found all three warehouses engulfed in flames upon arriving at the scene after receiving a distress call.
They immediately called for assistance from the Kota Kinabalu and Putatan fire stations.
“All three permanent warehouse blocks, each measuring about 279sqm, were completely destroyed in the fire.
“A total of 12 vehicles in the area were also destroyed. No casualties were reported,” he said, adding that the fire was brought under control at 12.30am yesterday.
Mohd Pisar said 29 firefighters, supported by fire engines and water tankers, took part in the operation.
“Fire suppression work is still ongoing so that no hotspots within the warehouse area remain.
“The cause of the fire and the extent of the losses have yet to be determined,” he said, adding that police and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd personnel were also at the scene to assist.
