MCMC probes content said to insult Negri royalty

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into content uploaded on the social media platform Threads, suspected of containing insults against the royal institution of Negri Sembilan.

MCMC said the content in question touched on issues concerning the position of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

As part of the investigation, MCMC recorded a statement from an individual at the Labu police station.

“Also seized was a mobile phone along with an eSIM for forensic analysis. The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588),” it said in a statement, Bernama reported.

MCMC said it would also examine how the content was disseminated across social media platforms and work with relevant enforcement agencies should other offences under existing laws warrant action.

MCMC emphasised that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly, in accordance with the law and with respect for the royal institution. It added that any enforcement action would be carried out based on facts, evidence and due legal process.
