The Prime Minister said the duo’s success which ended Malaysia’s 34-year wait for the title was a historic milestone for Malaysian sport.

He said the victory had also become a source of pride for Malaysians.

“An achievement to be proud of! Congratulations to Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim on winning the girls’ doubles title at the World Junior Badminton Championships.

“A new chapter in the history of Malaysian badminton!” Bernama reported him as saying in a Facebook post yesterday.

Anwar also urged both shuttlers to maintain their excellent form and further enhance the country’s standing on the international stage.

“Syabas (well done), keep up the momentum and continue to make Malaysia proud!” he said.

In Saturday’s final at the Cairo International Stadium, the second-seeded Malaysians defeated Japan’s Nijika Kamata-Shizuku Kashio 15-7, 9-15, 15-12.

This is Malaysia’s first girls’ doubles title since the world junior meet was first held in 1992.
