PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confirms it has received a complaint over the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to create and distribute sexual images and videos, allegedly of students and teachers at a school in Kedah.
In a statement on Thursday (Oct 8), MCMC said misusing AI to create or distribute sexual content that could affect the safety, dignity and well-being of victims, particularly children, is subject to action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
It said licensed service providers also have child protection obligations under Section 18 of the Online Safety Act 2025.
"If convicted, a fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both, may be imposed.
"For offences committed against children, the penalty may include imprisonment for up to five years, subject to the provisions of the law in force," MCMC said.
The issue also involves various agencies, including the Communications Ministry, Home Ministry, Education Ministry and police, which have their respective jurisdictions.
"MCMC will cooperate with the relevant parties in the investigation," it said.
MCMC reminded the public not to create, upload or redistribute sexual content involving or allegedly involving children, as such actions could harm victims and affect the investigation process.
Those with relevant information are urged to channel it to the authorities through the appropriate channels. – Bernama
