MCMC probes Threads content allegedly insulting Negri Sembilan royal institution

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has started investigating content uploaded on the social media platform Threads that allegedly contains insults against the Negri Sembilan royal institution.

In a statement on Sunday (Oct 18), the commission said the content in question touches on issues concerning the position of the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

As part of the investigation, the commission recorded a statement from an individual at the Labu police station.

"Also seized was a mobile phone along with an eSIM for forensic analysis. The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588]," the statement read.

MCMC is also examining how the content was disseminated across social media platforms and will work with relevant enforcement agencies should other offences under existing laws warrant action.

The commission emphasised that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly, in accordance with the law and with respect for the royal institution.

The commission added that any enforcement action will be carried out based on facts, evidence and due legal process. - Bernama
