PETALING JAYA: Grab Malaysia has introduced “Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta)”, a dedicated ride-hailing service feature for families with children aged four to 12.
Families can book Standard 6-seater rides with dedicated booster seats driven by driver-partners trained in installing and managing them.
Additionally, for children aged 7 to 12, selected Grab EV Exec rides feature booster seats provided by Malaysian baby gear company Koopers.
As part of the company’s commitment towards building a safer platform for millions of Malaysians, the feature gives families greater peace of mind when travelling with young children by addressing the logistical hassle of carrying bulky car seats.
“With ‘Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta)’, we hope to make it easier for families to travel light by offering dedicated booster seats. This reflects a commitment we share with the Transport Ministry, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and partners like Koopers, to ensure that when families travel, they travel safely and that children are never an afterthought on the road,” said Grab Malaysia executive director Rashid Shukor.
The booster seats provided through this feature are in accordance with the MIROS safety guidelines.
Although child restraint systems (CRS) have been mandatory in Malaysia since Jan 1, 2020, adoption remains low. MIROS’ observational research emphasised that raising awareness of CRS usage and translating that awareness into consistent action was key to protecting young passengers.
“Protecting children on the road is a shared responsibility. Research found that booster seats reduce injury risk by 45% for children aged four to eight compared to seat belt use alone. MIROS’ CRS guidelines emphasise selecting a suitable restraint for a child’s size and installing it correctly.
“We welcome this initiative to make child restraints more accessible to families using ride-hailing services and encourage their correct use on every journey,” said MIROS director-general Assoc Prof Dr Siti Zaharah Ishak.
Convenient booking
This feature is currently only available via Advance Booking on the Grab app for rides to and from Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Users can select the feature under the Standard 6-seater or Grab EV Exec ride.
On the Standard 6-seater ride, each booking provides one booster seat for a RM10 add-on fee. Meanwhile, the seats are offered on Grab EV Exec rides as a free value-added feature.
The rollout will continue in progressive phases across the wider Klang Valley area and subsequently across Penang and Johor Baru.
The launch is part of Grab’s wider safety ecosystem, which includes features such as AudioProtect and Women-Only Rides (Beta).
Through these initiatives, the company continues to work towards making end-to-end safety more accessible for every user.
