24 flood victims evacuated to SK Seri Penanti relief centre

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A total of 24 people from eight families were evacuated to a temporary relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Penanti after flooding in Kubang Semang on Saturday night (Oct 17).

Penang Fire and Rescue Department Operations and Rescue Division assistant director John Sagun Francis said the centre opened at 8.30pm and police moved all the victims there.

He said firefighters from the Penanti Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to Masjid Kubang Semang to monitor the situation after receiving a call at 9pm.

"Heavy rain caused flooding in eight houses…floodwaters in the affected homes were estimated to be knee-deep, but no one was reported trapped, and no rescue operations were carried out," he said in a statement on Saturday.

John said the situation at the scene was under control and water levels were gradually receding, but the area remained under observation.

Meanwhile, the Social Welfare Department's InfoBencana website showed that as of 11.17pm, 27 people from nine families were at the relief centre, comprising 17 adults and 10 children, including four senior citizens and four people with disabilities. – Bernama
