Woman cuts safety rope

AN elderly woman in China cut a high-rise worker’s safety rope to use it as a clothesline.

Guang Ming Daily reported that the worker, Liu, discovered that his 120m-long safety rope, which is tied from the 30th floor to the second floor of a building in Foshan, Guangdong, had been cut by more than 10m.

The resident, who is in her late 70s, reportedly said she did not know the rope was a safety equipment and had cut it because she needed it to hang clothes.

Liu decided not to report the matter to the police, considering the resident’s age, and instead sought 400 yuan (RM237) in compensation for the damaged rope.

> The daily also reported that a supermarket entrance awning in Bagan Ajam, Penang, collapsed during strong winds and heavy rain on Wednesday, crushing three motorcycles parked underneath.

The incident happened at 1.37pm, but no one was injured.

> Five people have been arrested after a woman allegedly tried to pawn a fake gold bracelet at a pawnshop in Kota Tinggi, Johor, Oriental Daily reported.

The pawnshop manager became suspicious after testing the 23g bracelet and found it to be fake before lodging a police report.

Police subsequently arrested five suspects aged between 34 and 62, comprising three local men, a local woman and a foreign woman.

Police believe the arrest could help solve several recent cases involving the pawning and sale of fake gold jewellery in the district.

The suspects were remanded until Oct 2.
