A 78-YEAR-OLD woman was taking an evening walk when a stranger approached her and touched her feet in an apparent show of respect.

However, the elderly woman of Indian descent ended up being robbed of gold jewellery worth 150,000 rupees (RM7,400) in the case that happened in the Canadian city of Brampton, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The suspect touched the victim’s feet and hugged her like an acquaintance before swiping her gold necklace and bangles, escaping in a sports utility vehicle.

The victim’s son said his mother, who has poor vision, initially thought the younger woman was a neighbour.

Now, she was shaken and unable to even walk after she realised what had happened, he said.

He said the jewellery held great sentimental value to the family as they had been crafted by his goldsmith father as gifts to his mother during their wedding in 1971.

Canadian police confirmed at least one other incident involving a similar modus operandi.
