KUALA LUMPUR: There was still no sign of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at his Jalan Langgak Duta residence here as media personnel began leaving the area at around 7pm on Friday (Sept 18).
As of press time, Najib’s return remains unclear.
A check at the residence found local and international media personnel, who had gathered as early as 10am to cover developments surrounding the former Prime Minister’s royal pardon, gradually leaving the area.
While police personnel were stationed at the location to maintain security, there was no movement in or out of the building.
According to a source, Najib’s eldest son Datuk Muhammad Nizar had said that family members would not be present at the Jalan Langgak Duta residence.
Earlier, Najib was granted a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to him paying a RM50mil fine.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya held on Friday (Sept 18), which was chaired by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department said the conditional pardon was granted with the consent of the King.
BHEUU said if Najib failed to comply with any of the conditions imposed, the conditional pardon would be revoked and he would have to immediately continue serving the remainder of his sentence in prison.
The latest decision came after Najib’s previous application for a pardon was deferred at the 63rd Pardons Board meeting on Sept 11.
Najib began serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison on Aug 23, 2022, after the Federal Court upheld his conviction and sentence in the case involving the misappropriation of RM42mil belonging to SRC International.
