PETALING JAYA: Malaysian students will have greater access to study opportunities at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) following a £5mil (about RM28mil) philanthropic commitment by YTL Corporation Berhad.

The commitment will establish the YTL Malaysian Scholarship Programme at LSE, which will provide scholarship opportunities for Malaysian students over the next 20 years.

YTL executive chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh Sock Ping said the initiative reflected the importance of investing in young Malaysians and developing future leaders.

“The future of a nation is nurtured in the minds and hearts of its young people. By investing in capable and passionate students today, we sow the seeds of a Malaysia whose progress is guided by wisdom, whose prosperity is shared, and whose leadership is worthy of the trust of its people,” he said.

Yeoh said he hoped the programme would enable talented Malaysian students to pursue their aspirations at LSE and eventually return with new perspectives, skills and knowledge to contribute to the country.

LSE president and vice-chancellor Prof Larry Kramer said the scholarship represented an investment in society's future potential.

“Empowering future generations to create, innovate, and lead offers our best path to a better world ahead,” he said.

In September, the inaugural cohort of nine YTL Scholars joined LSE, comprising undergraduate and postgraduate students across nine departments.
