Jakim panel to review drama series 'Madu Atau Racun' and 'Cela', says Finas

KUALA LUMPUR: The drama series Madu Atau Racun and Cela will be reviewed by a panel under the Islamic Development Malaysia Department (Jakim) based on their overall storylines and content context, says the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas).

In a statement, Finas said the matter was among those agreed upon during its meeting with Jakim on Friday (Sept 11).

It said engagement sessions with players in the film and television industry would be held to discuss procedures and guidelines for content production.

Finas will also introduce additional conditions in the Filming Authentication Certificate (SPP) to ensure every production complies with the guidelines and does not cause harm to society.

"This measure is not intended to restrict creative freedom, but to ensure creativity develops responsibly while taking into account religious sensitivities, cultural values, the interests of society and the country's legal framework," read the statement.

On Sept 2, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan said the Religious Affairs Department objected to the screening of Madu atau Racun, amid concerns and controversy surrounding the drama series.

Following this, streaming platform iQiyi agreed to temporarily remove the six episodes of the drama series that had already aired, while postponing the remaining six episodes to allow all 12 episodes to be edited and reassessed. – Bernama
