KUALA LUMPUR: No highway patrol officers or staff will be retrenched due to the implementation of the Smart Highway Traffic Management Centre, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
The Works Minister said this because the system is powered by artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) that delivers real-time travel information directly through an integrated traffic management center at highways.
“Job security remains a key priority. Rather than laying off employees, IJM will focus on upskilling workers to take on higher-value responsibilities and retasking them to areas where their support is needed most,” he said during the launch of the system at Besraya Traffic Monitoring Centre at Plaza Tol Loke Yew on Tuesday (Sept 8).
Additionally, Nanta also launched the Virtual Reality (VR) Highway Safety Programme aimed at boosting road safety awareness among school students.
This programme is by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and IJM.
“This early education initiative directly addresses human error, the leading cause of highway accidents by instilling safe habits at a young age.
“It supports the Works Ministry and LLM in their drive toward smarter, more efficient, and safer highway management,” he added.
