GEORGE TOWN: A woman in her 20s was injured after part of a heritage building fell onto her at the junction of Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling and Lebuh China, opposite the Goddess of Mercy Temple, at about midnight on Wednesday (Sept 2).
During the incident, the woman was following a Hungry Ghost Festival procession which had departed at 11pm on Tuesday.
It is understood that volunteers accompanying the procession were attempting to realign an overhead cable when the cable accidentally caught onto part of the building.
The mounting attached to the wall reportedly came loose, dislodging a section of cement from the top corner of the building.
The cement section then fell onto the woman, causing injuries.
She was subsequently taken away by ambulance for treatment.
On Aug 4, two Sri Lankan tourists were injured when a wooden beam and concrete debris from the second-floor roof of a heritage shophouse fell onto them in Lebuh Armenian.
The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) subsequently announced plans to appoint consultants to conduct structural safety inspections of heritage buildings, particularly those showing signs of deterioration or potential safety risks.
