Married couple nabbed, ganja and ganja buds worth RM3.56mil seized in Kudat

KOTA KINABALU: Police arrested a couple after seizing RM3.56mil worth of cannabis weighing nearly 60kg during an operation in Sabah’s northern Kudat district.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said on Tuesday (Sept 1) that the seizure involved 44.3kg of cannabis buds and 5.6kg of cannabis during an operation on Aug 20.

He said it was the first time state police have recorded a seizure of cannabis buds in Sabah.

Comm Jauteh said the 35-year-old local man and his 32-year-old foreign wife were detained based on intelligence from the Malaysian Border Control Agency (AKPS).

The husband was arrested at 4.40pm at a volleyball court in Kampung Tanjong Kapor, while his wife was detained 10 minutes later along the same village road.

He said both were taken to Kudat district police headquarters after four plastic packages suspected to contain cannabis buds and cannabis were found.

Further checks led to the discovery of 75 plastic packets of cannabis buds weighing 44.3kg and 10 packets of cannabis weighing 5.6kg, he added.

He said investigations showed that the husband had three prior drug-related offences on his record as well as preventive detention orders, while his wife had no criminal history.

"The husband tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, while his wife tested negative," he said, adding that both suspects were charged in court on Aug 28 under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a possible death penalty upon conviction.

"This success is the result of continuous intelligence work and cooperation from the public in providing information to the police," Comm Jauteh said.
