KOTA KINABALU: Three schools in Sabah’s central Tongod district have been operating on limited genset capacities, solar panels and candles since their two main transformers broke down last week.
Kuamut assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah said this caused hostel students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tongod, Penangah dan Entilibon to study under dim candlelight, making it hard for them, especially with SPM and STPM exams nearing.
He urged the Sabah Electricity to send in more mobile gensets in, to add on to the existing ones as the capacity of 2,000kW as they were insufficient.
“I was also informed that some students and their parents had to rely on candles to study and carry out chores as the sun goes down,” he said in a statement.
Masiung hopes Sabah Electricity would be able to send in additional gen sets for the schools while waiting for the transformers to be repaired.
Meanwhile, community development officer for the area, Tokyo Hasim Omar when contacted said power supply in the district has suffered recurring disruptions since last month, affecting many government operations and other daily activities.
He called for newer and larger capacity transformers to be installed as there were more buildings and a growing population in the district.
